Worker Freedom Act

Jan 24 2011

Increasingly, employers are using the workplace to force religious and political beliefs – including beliefs about unions – on workers.  Under current law, employees who object are subject to discharge or discrimination.  Workers should not have to fear retaliation just because they oppose this type of indoctrination by their employer.  These are matters of individual conscience unrelated to job performance.  This bill would protect individuals’ fundamental right of freedom of thought on core matters wholly unrelated to their job performance; protect employee privacy by prohibiting employers from discharging or discriminating against employees who choose not to participate in employer communications aimed at changing their vote or other political activities or their religious beliefs and practices; and prohibit retaliation against employees who seek redress.  This bill would specifically exempt communications that are about work performance and related to the normal operations of the business.
