Reflections from Southern Minnesota

Oct 8 2019

Minnesota Expects More:  It was a drizzly night not worthy of an umbrella, but I took one anyways.  I thought I might need it for protection.  Just over one block from my backyard is the Red Wing American Legion.  I walked.  The Republicans were holding a Town Hall.  In a non-descript, but moldy, back room my two MN House Representatives (Barb Haley R {MN 21-A} and Steve Drazkowski R {MN 21-B}) would speak to their constituents.  All questions must be submitted beforehand.  Questions are chosen by a partisan moderator.  Applause and cheers erupt after each Representative answers a self-serving question.   Kind of like a Trump rally.  Pathetic.

Highlights of Steve Drazkowski Q & A:  Minnesota’s political climate is “institutional corruption” … “Our state economy is strong because of all Trump has done for us” … “Steve Simon has made voting too easy”.  He spent a lot of time chastising Ilhan Omar.  It was a pitiful delivery of racist diatribe.  I stayed to the end but, it was not easy.

Go Farmers:  On a more positive note, our socialistic President (Trump) gave our Southern Minnesota farmers a big chunk of dough to help them through tough times.  Our Minnesota farmers are accepting the principles of socialism quite well. They have about 16 billion dollars in Federal cash to divide up due to the Trump tariffs.  That subsidy, along with soil banking, flood relief, untaxed farm fuel for their new diesel pick-ups, programs for their laid off immigrant farm help, free school lunches for their kids and subsidized family health care should see them through our (their) tough times. I don’t blame them for voting Republican. Go Socialists!

MN State Retiree Council Meetings (MSRC):  There are many things union seniors learn from attending MSRC meetings.  Of course the guests are very informative.  Perhaps the packets of flyers, political data, and articles of interest keep the meeting going into the next day.  I eagerly collect and read the information as soon as I can.  Retirees like being kept in the loop.  If you haven’t attended a recent meeting, please do so. Your friends miss you.

Economist Review:  The Business Roundtable states 200 CEOs are looking out for the interest of their workers. I guess I was missed.

Social Security: Count on It!  Join many Minnesotans on Saturday, October 19 at a Social Security Forum sponsored by the Minneapolis Regional Retiree Council.  See information elsewhere in this Bulletin for details.  A” live stream” of this event will be taking place in Red Wing, MN.  Call me Bruce Yernberg for details about the Red Wing event.  651-388-9309.

Rising Drug Prices:  I don’t know why Republican legislators accept money from pharmaceutical companies. They can’t keep it a secret. You would think they’d be embarrassed.  Read in this issue about a senior facing tough times because of the high price of drugs.

In solidarity,  Bruce Yernberg, Red Wing
