The South East Area Labor Council Retiree Club (SEALCRC) is now regrouping after the recent election. Because the SEALCRC includes 16 Minnesota counties out of 87 (or about 20% of Minnesota’s counties) and 2 congressional districts out of 8, many of our retiree volunteers worked close to home and a few of us volunteered in the metro area. We volunteered for day work. As retired union seniors we prefer working nights due likely to problematic eyesight.
The Retiree Council reports are still being gathered but Minnesota’s retired union seniors have more than met their shift goal for Minnesota’s Labor 2018.
The leadership of the State AFL-CIO will be determining positive changes for Labor 2020. I think the term 2020 has a good feel to it. The MN State Retiree Council is already scheduling activities to increase volunteerism among union retirees. Not only must we stay solid in the areas we won; we must reach out to districts that need more of our help.
Tom Huiting of Rochester and I attended a meeting this past December of Union retirees who are the smiling volunteers for the Minneapolis Regional Retiree Council. There were at least 50 in attendance. I must say it is encouraging to see such positivity. Senior positivity is trending. Their President, Leif Grina, summarized the political efforts the Minneapolis Retiree Council played a significant part in. A special guest was Congressman elect Dean Phillips of the 3rd District. What a genuine guy he is. And of course there was a delicious holiday buffet.
I have noticed something different among union retired seniors since the election... smiles. Yes we are smiling more and that makes us feel good. I haven’t heard many of my union senior friends say “you know this is my last year.’ I have been volunteering for 50 [or 40] years and I am tired”. No sir. With success comes renewed vitality.
We may have some worries out there with this anti-union tweet guy out in Washington. He is not a ‘just cause’ president. Come to think of it he is a senior and some say retired at that. I wonder if he is collecting Social Security?
We Union Seniors, working together, can change the way things are headed before they go too far. So pay special attention to the activities coming up soon. And participate as much and often as you can.
Respectfully and the kindest of regards,
Red Wing, MN
