Minnesota AFL-CIO urges lawmakers not to squander surplus on tax giveaways to corporations and the rich

Feb 26 2016

Minnesota AFL-CIO President Bill McCarthy issued the following statement on the report showing the state budget surplus had decreased from $1.2 billion to $900 million:

“While slower economic growth has decreased Minnesota’s budget surplus, we are still outperforming our neighbors in nearly every indicator.

“However, the slower economic growth should be a warning to lawmakers not to squander the surplus on tax giveaways to corporations and the richest Minnesotans or drain the unemployment insurance fund.

“Now is the time to invest in priorities that support working families like universal pre-K, new revenue to fix our crumbling transportation system, and relief for laid off workers on the Iron Range.”
