“2020: Eyes on the Election” is the theme of the First Annual Conference and Election of Board Members and Officers of the Minnesota State Retiree Council, AFL-CIO. Having a “conference” is a change from the past. This change comes about because delegate action at the 2018 Annual Convention altered the By-Laws to make the odd year “get-together” into a Conference with an election of Officers and Board members rather than a full convention.
The First Annual Conference happens on Wednesday, September 25 at the Sheet Metal Workers Local 10 Hall, 1681 Cope Avenue in Maplewood. Registration begins at 9 a.m.
The goal of the Conference will be to provide information and motivation to make the Retiree Council’s contribution to the Labor 2020 campaign the best ever. Since we did a top-notch job in 2018, outperforming our prior work will require lots of preparation.
There will be information booths on Social Security, Health Care Issues, the 2020 Census and probably on additional issues with people at the booths to talk with and answer questions. There will also be an issue survey to fill out. The “call to order” will be at 10 a.m., but there will be things to do between 9 and 10.
The morning will start with a political speaker to emphasize the stakes in 2020. We will then hear speakers on issues and have a chance for discussion on each of the issues. The afternoon will provide information on the revised presidential primary/precinct caucus calendar and functions. We will hear an outline of the Labor 2020 timetable and goals. We will then discuss how retirees will fit into this picture.
At 2 p.m. the Conference will adjourn to have the Election of Officers and Board members. Because these official actions are to be taken at this get together, credentials have been provided to every affiliate so they can register their voting delegates. IF YOUR AFFILIATE HAS NOT RECEIVED THE OFFICIAL CALL AND CREDENTIAL FORMS, PLEASE CONTACT THE RETIREE COUNCIL AT 651 227 7647 EXT. 121.
The call also includes a Nomination for Office Form. Credentials and Nominations Forms need to be returned to the AFL-CIO office by September 20, 2019. The Nominations Committee will be meeting from 9-10 the morning of the Conference to meet with nominees who have not been previously screened. The Nomination and Election of Officers and Board members will be the only business conducted. The Election meeting will adjourn by 3 p.m. or earlier.
This will be an exciting “launch” into the 2020 campaign effort. JOIN US!!!
