Statement on Minneapolis school shooting

Aug 27 2025

Minnesota AFL-CIO President Bernie Burnham made the following statement on today’s school shooting in Minneapolis:

“Minnesota’s entire Labor Movement grieves with the families, staff, students, and community members impacted by today’s horrific shooting at Annunciation church and school that cost at least two children their lives.

“As an elementary school teacher, this is particularly personal for me. School should be a place where students and staff feel safe to learn and grow. Sadly, the constant threat of violence has been a reality for nearly three decades.

“Far too many leaders in Washington have become numb to the threats our children and educators face every day. They instead cater to extremists and refuse to take any meaningful action to stop gun violence in our nation.

“If Congress continues to sit idle, Minnesota’s lawmakers must do everything in their power to help make our schools and communities safer places.”
