This Week at the Capitol: May 13, 2022

May 13 2022
At the Legislature

Conference committees met all week, mostly walking through side-by-sides.

Tuesday
The Senate passed SF3885 Coleman, authorizing insurers to offer paid family leave benefits.
Kent offered an amendment to insert the language of SF1205, Paid Family and Medical Leave. It was ruled out of order and Kent appealed the ruling. The ruling was upheld on party lines with Bakk and Tomassoni joining Republicans. The bill passed on a 37-29 party-line vote with Bakk, Hoffman, and Tomassoni joining the majority.

Wednesday
The Senate took up HF3669, their second omnibus tax bill, which spends a lot of money on tax cuts and includes their proposal to allow insurance companies to sell “paid family leave” insurance policies and gives tax credits to small businesses to purchase the policies. All Republicans plus Bakk, Eken, Hoffman, Newton, Putnam, Rest, Tomassoni, and Wiger voted for the bill.

Thursday
The Jobs conference committee met for the first time and began their walkthrough of the side-by-sides.
