Responding to Governor Walz’s Executive Order overruling state regulations on mining, Minnesota AFL-CIO President Bernie Burnham made the following statement:

“Mining in Northern Minnesota has unfortunately become a wedge issue that politicians across the political spectrum continue to use to generate outrage and headlines. We are disappointed that Governor Walz’s order adds to that chaos.

“Minnesota has some of the strongest labor and environmental regulations in the world, especially when it comes to mining. In fact, the Department of Natural Resources recently concluded, following a six-year process, that our state’s regulations and permitting procedures are strong enough to protect our waters from any potential nonferrous mining impact.

“Mining isn’t a zero-sum issue. Unlike other jurisdictions, Minnesota’s robust regulations allow for safe and responsible mining that protects workers and our natural resources while providing Northern Minnesota with an economic shot in the arm.

“Politicians from all parties need to stop playing games with mining and follow the science. We call on all state leaders to let Minnesota’s strong regulatory framework guide decision making.”
