Federal Employees Protest Budget Cuts that Threaten to Shut Down Social Security
The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) and Social Security workers are deeply worried that the proposed Fiscal Year (FY) 2011 federal budget for the Social Security Administration would have a devastating impact on the services provided to seniors, the disabled and the families who have lost a parent or spouse.
House Republicans have proposed a $1.7 billion reduction in SSA funding for the remainder of FY 2011. If this proposal is included in the new Continuing Resolution (CR) for FY 2011, the budget cuts would lead to a month of furloughs at the Social Security Administration.
In protest of these proposed cuts, thousands of Social Security workers will be protesting across the country to stop the assault on SSA’s ability to serve the American public. You can join them for an information picket at the (1) Minneapolis Social Security Office and (2) Saint Paul Minnesota Federal Building (along with other outstate locations including (3) the Mankato Minnesota Social Security Office at 11:30 am, Wednesday, April 6, 2011 (employees will be picketing during their lunch break so it will last less than an hour)
