Workers' Rights

Labor leaders call on United Way to urge Dave Berg to end lockout or remove him from leadership post

The now five-month long American Crystal Sugar lockout has created hardship and economic distress in the Red River Valley.

Given the hardship the lockout has caused, Minnesota AFL-CIO President Shar Knutson and North Dakota AFL-CIO President Gary Granzotto called on the leadership of the Cass-Clay United Way to ask American Crystal CEO Dave Berg to end the lockout or rescind his position on the United Way Board of Trustees. read more »

Help Ohio Workers Fight Back

Almost 25 million people are unemployed, underemployed or have stopped looking for work—and wages are essentially flat. The middle class is shrinking. Working people—the 99%—are told to sacrifice more while the rich keep getting richer.

And now Ohio workers—including nurses, firefighters and teachers—have lost some of their most basic rights under Ohio’s Senate Bill 5, which many say is even worse than what Gov. Scott Walker pulled in Wisconsin.  read more »

As Minnesota Gets Back to Work, Long Term Budget Trouble Remains

Republicans Chose Millionaires Over Minnesota’s Future

As the special session ending Minnesota’s 19-day government shutdown came to a close, Minnesota AFL-CIO President Shar Knutson issued the following statement:

“While this 2-year budget avoids the GOP’s draconian cuts to education, health care, and jobs, it’s disappointing that Republican legislators would only agree to one-time revenue that borrows against our future and writes school children yet another IOU. read more »

Governor Mark Dayton: The future of Minnesota is at stake in budget debate

This state government shutdown is painful for many Minnesotans. I am often asked, “Why? Why are you and Republican legislators putting us through these hardships?”

I believe that the future of Minnesota is at stake. Our way of life, what makes Minnesota special and successful, hangs in the balance. read more »

Petition: Tell Minnesota Republicans to Do their Jobs!

We counted on our Minnesota legislators to do their jobs and solve the state’s budget crisis. But instead, the Republican majority has dug in their heels and insisted on a budget that hurts middle-class families.

Now, the Republicans have gone too far—shutting down state services and programs, costing us thousands of jobs, halting needed construction projects and even closing state parks. read more »

Stop the Shutdown and Protect the Middle Class

Time is almost up.

Republican legislators’ insistence on protecting the richest 2% and passing an all-cuts budget that hurts the middle class is about to lead to a full shutdown of Minnesota’s state government at midnight on July 1st.

GOP legislators are failing and it’s time to stand up and tell them to do their jobs before millions of Minnesotans get a preview of what their all-cuts budget will look like.

There are two opportunities to make your voice heard tomorrow. read more »
